Robert Ludlum was een van 's werelds best verkopende auteurs. Hij werd geboren op 25 mei 1927 in New York City en maakte als jongen het laatste oorlogsjaar in de Pacific mee. Voordat hij op zijn veertigste besloot de gok te wagen en te gaan schrijven, was hij acteur en theaterproducent. Zijn eerste boek, De Scarlatti erfenis, werd meteen een ongekend, wereldwijd succes. Daarna volgden de bestsellers elkaar op.
